… port - ESP: use the ISR critical-section variant from an ISR; the task variant aborts there under CONFIG_FREERTOS_CHECK_PORT_CRITICAL_COMPLIANCE. - RT-Thread: rt_spin_lock() only locks the scheduler on UP (5.0.2-5.2.1); use the irqsave variant. - RTX4: the lock was empty; use a mutex plus the USB IRQ mask. Not tsk_lock(), which does not nest and would end a caller's scheduler lock. - ThreadX: masking only the USB IRQ let another thread enter; mask interrupts with saved posture (TX_PORT_BASEPRI in BASEPRI mode, where tx_interrupt_control() writes its argument to BASEPRI) and keep the USB IRQ mask. Reject ThreadX SMP. Refs #4054, closes #4158.
On a single-core MCU the "spin lock" is a critical section, and the name led drivers to use raw dcd_int_disable/enable pairs instead. Old names stay as aliases; nrf5x keeps them until its open PR stack lands. Document the contract, the per-OSAL implementation and the IRQ priority rule. Refs #4054
A DCD may complete a transfer synchronously from task code (FT9xx ready OUT, RP2040 saved short-packet data), so xfer_isr can run outside an ISR. Audio assumed ISR context and re-armed with is_isr = true from a task. Breaking: an application class driver implementing xfer_isr must add the bool in_isr parameter and pass it on instead of assuming ISR context. Refs #4054
A driver's raw dcd_int_disable/enable pair ignores the nesting depth, so a queue lock inside it unmasks the IRQ without an OS, and an unlocked task caller of usbd_int_set races the depth with the stack's critical section on RTX4 and ThreadX. The helpers update the depth inside the critical section.
ep_write()'s mask covered only the store, not the read half of the read-modify-write. The fifo copy in dcd_transmit_packet stays outside the section since it may take the fifo mutex, so the EPnR is re-read inside it. ch_write() keeps the host driver's own NVIC mask.
dcd_edpt_iso_activate, dcd_edpt_close_all and dcd_edpt_clear_stall only masked the USB IRQ, which let two RTOS tasks interleave the indexed register window. dcd_edpt_xfer, dcd_edpt_xfer_fifo and dcd_edpt_stall publish events, which must stay ordered ahead of a later bus reset or SETUP from the ISR, so they hold usbd_int_mask_enter() from task code instead of the raw mask, whose enable ignored the nesting depth.
Endpoint open, close, iso alloc/activate, stall and clear-stall take usbd_critical_enter(false); their timeout logs run after the exit, and close_all takes one section per pipe since each close may spin in pipe_reset(). dcd_edpt_xfer/_fifo hold usbd_int_mask_enter() from task code instead: a parked OUT packet can complete the transfer on submit, and that completion must be published before the ISR can queue a bus reset or SETUP ahead of it.
prepare_next_setup_packet() only runs from the ISR, so it now passes is_isr true; also cover the EP0 EPSTALL read-modify-write, which races process_stall().
The IN path returned from inside the masked window on a bus reset or a busy endpoint, leaving the USB IRQ disabled.
The driver's dcd_int_disable() overwrites its interrupt-enable mirrors, so a raw disable/enable pair nested inside the stack's own mask lost the saved enables; the stack section nests instead.
The raw NVIC disables were never re-enabled, so the USB IRQ stayed off after tud_connect()/tud_disconnect(). Hold usbd_int_mask_enter() over the whole sequence instead of a critical section: the CLKUSABLE wait has no documented bound, and with FRZCLK set every register is read-only (DS60001527J p808), so a suspend ISR that refreezes the clock mid-sequence must be held off.
The SPI lock re-enabled the IRQ unconditionally, undoing hcd_init's disable and any outer stack mask; usbh_int_mask_enter() nests on stack-owned state. hcd_init no longer enables the IRQ: tuh_rhport_init() does after it returns.
Mask the port interrupt sources in INTENCLR across the reset instead of an NVIC window spanning hcd_port_reset() and hcd_port_reset_end(): the stack runs other work between them.
hcd_edpt_xfer holds usbh_int_mask_enter() instead: its FIFO path has unbounded hardware waits and TU_ASSERTs that cannot run inside the section.
The NVIC window spanned hcd_port_reset() and hcd_port_reset_end(), with the stack running other work in between; mask USBFS_UIE_DETECT in INT_EN instead, each RMW under the stack critical section.
A VALID single-buffered ISO IN starts sending as soon as its count is set. Setting the count before entering the section let a host IN token send the packet before iso_in_sending was armed, so the USB ISR ignored the completion.
A transfer completing during port reset ran hcd_int_handler() with DEV_ADDR already 0. get_edpt_record(0, ep) returns NULL for a non-control endpoint, so PANIC() hung the board. Mask the transfer IRQ with the detect IRQ, clear the busy and NAK-pending state, and only treat UIF_TRANSFER as ours when UIE_TRANSFER is armed.

If an application aborts from a different core than the USB interrupt on a dual-core ESP32, usbh_critical_enter(false) no longer stops that interrupt. The DWC2 host interrupt never takes the matching lock.
handle_sof_irq() can read xfer_pending before the abort clears it, then start the transfer after the abort returns. Meanwhile, tuh_edpt_abort_xfer() releases the endpoint, allowing the application to reuse a buffer that USB still uses.
Protect the interrupt-side updates with the same lock, or retain controller-wide interrupt exclusion around these updates.

Problem
Task/ISR exclusion was inconsistent across the stack, the OSAL ports and the drivers (#4054):
usbd/usbh/usbc_int_set()did not nest: the outermost unlock, or a queue access inside a lock,re-enabled the USB IRQ even inside
dcd_init()/dcd_deinit()(usbd: nest usbd_int_set so a spin lock/unlock keeps the USB IRQ off where the stack disabled it #4163).rt_spin_lock()only locks thescheduler on UP, RTX4 had a stub, ThreadX masked only the USB IRQ, and ESP used the task API from an ISR on SMP
(osal: usbd_spin_lock does not mask the USB IRQ on RT-Thread UP and RTX4 #4158, osal: rtx4 and rtthread spin locks do not mask the USB IRQ #4074). On dual-core ESP32 (MAX3421 host) the ISR side took no lock at all.
dcd/hcd_int_disable/enablepairs as critical sections. They do not nest and, under an RTOS,do not stop another task from preempting.
xfer_isrcould run from task code (FT9xx, RP2040 synchronous completion), but audio re-armed withis_isr = truethere.Solution
Contract:
docs/porting.rst"Critical sections"; caller contexts:docs/reference/concurrency.rst.usbd/usbh/usbc_int_set()nest over stack-owned IRQ state. A leaked mask saturates the depth and keeps the IRQoff.
rt_spin_lock_irqsave.#erroron SMP.portENTER_CRITICAL_ISRfrom an ISR unlessCONFIG_FREERTOS_UNICORE.usbd/usbh_spin_lock/unlockare renamedusbd/usbh_critical_enter/exit; the old names stay as aliases.usbd/usbh_int_mask_enter/exit(in_isr)masks only the USB IRQ. It nests and is serialized with the criticalsection. It is for work that cannot go inside a critical section: an unbounded hardware wait, or a task-side
completion that must reach the stack before a later ISR bus reset/SETUP.
xfer_isrgets the realin_isr; audio and RP2040 forward it.Breaking: an application class driver implementing
xfer_isrmust add thebool in_isrparameter and pass it oninstead of assuming ISR context.
