Problem

When the endpoint has no dedicated hardware FIFO (CFG_TUD_EDPT_DEDICATED_HWFIFO == 0, for example DWC2 in DMA mode or rp2040), audiod_rx_xfer_isr() copies each received packet from the linear buffer into the OUT FIFO:

TU_VERIFY(0 < tu_fifo_write_n(&audio->ep_out_ff, audio->lin_buf_out, n_bytes_received));

(src/class/audio/audio_device.c:455). For a zero-length packet tu_fifo_write_n() writes nothing and returns 0, so the function returns before usbd_edpt_xfer() re-arms the endpoint (:458) and before tud_audio_rx_done_isr() (:471). The endpoint then receives nothing until the host sends SET_INTERFACE again.

A host may send a zero-length packet in place of any packet. USB Audio Data Formats 2.0, 2.1 Transfer Delimiter: "This specification considers two situations to be a Transfer Delimiter. The first is a zero-length data packet and the second is the absence of an isochronous transfer in a USB (micro)frame that would normally have an isochronous transfer. Both situations are considered equivalent and the audio function is expected to behave the same."

Fix

Write to the FIFO only when the packet has data. The re-arm, the FIFO-count feedback update and tud_audio_rx_done_isr() then run for a zero-length packet too, the callback with n_bytes_received == 0. Builds with a dedicated hardware FIFO are not changed.

Unit test

test/unit-test/test/device/audio/test_audio_device.c, modelled on the video device test (hand-written usbd stubs). It opens a UAC2 function with one isochronous OUT endpoint, selects alternate setting 1, and sends a packet, a zero-length packet and another packet. It checks that the endpoint is re-armed after each, that both packets arrive in the FIFO in order, and that tud_audio_rx_done_isr() sees the zero-length packet. Its defines in project.yml set CFG_TUD_EDPT_DEDICATED_HWFIFO=0 for this test. Ceedling passes it after the global CFG_TUD_EDPT_DEDICATED_HWFIFO=1, so the later value applies; gcc notes the redefinition as a warning, which Ceedling does not show.

ceedling test:all (Ceedling 1.0.1, as in CI), on master with this test and its project.yml lines added:

Hardware

Measured with TinyUSB 0.21.0 and this change back-ported (the same hunk; it applies to master at offset -16), in a UAC2 sink used as a test device (bit-perfect-checker), on STM32U5A5 (NUCLEO-U5A5ZJ-Q), STM32F723 (STM32F723E-DISCO) and STM32U5G9 (STM32U5G9J-DK2), each at high speed with DWC2 in DMA mode. A Linux host program sent a 48 kHz 16-bit stereo stream as 24-byte packets, with a zero-length packet after data packets 40000, 56000 and 72000 (5, 7 and 9 s into the stream). usbmon showed every packet, the three zero-length packets included, with status 0. The device compares the received samples with the known file and logs one line per stream.

Without the change (NUCLEO-U5A5ZJ-Q; the other two boards logged the same values): the endpoint stops at the first zero-length packet, after 40000 packets (5.000 s).

With the change: the whole stream arrives bit-exact; lost=3 counts the three zero-length packets as (micro)frames without audio.

On master, with examples/device/uac2_speaker_fb built with -DCFG_TUD_DWC2_DMA_ENABLE=1 (so that the linear-buffer path is used), on stm32u5a5nucleo and on stm32f723disco (device on the OTG_HS port with the internal PHY, -DRHPORT_DEVICE=1). Both enumerated at high speed (new high-speed USB device ... using xhci-pci-renesas).

Playback with this branch. 44.1, 48, 88.2 and 96 kHz 16-bit stereo WAVs (about 12.6 s each) played from Linux through raw ALSA hw:: every play finished with exit 0 and xruns=0 on both boards, and the example's HID debug telemetry showed fifo_count moving while playing (median, min-max, in bytes of the 1664-byte FIFO):

rate STM32U5A5 STM32F723
44.1 kHz 932, 480-948 932, 468-948
48 kHz 928, 720-948 928, 716-948

96 kHz 1024, 676-1060 1024, 672-1060

Zero-length packets, master and this branch. A libusb host program sent SET_CUR 48000 to clock 0x04, selected alternate setting 1 of interface 1 (the HID interface stayed with its driver) and sent a 48 kHz 16-bit stereo stream as 24-byte packets, with a zero-length packet after data packets 40000, 56000 and 72000 (5, 7 and 9 s into the stream). Then alternate setting 0, and 1 s of silence in alternate setting 1. On the host all packets completed with status 0 in every run:

file: packets=101038 zero_length=3 completed=101038 status={0: 101038} bad=0 errors=0 time=12.625 s

The example updates fifo_count only in tud_audio_rx_done_isr(), so a value that stops changing means that no packet reaches the class. Telemetry per window, STM32U5A5 (FROZEN: one value for the whole window):

On master the last change of fifo_count came 5.014 s into the stream (STM32F723: 5.011 s), at the first zero-length packet; the endpoint received nothing more until SET_INTERFACE re-armed it for the silence phase. With this branch it kept changing to the end of the stream. The STM32F723 gave the same picture: master frozen at 504 after the first zero-length packet, this branch changing in all three windows (medians 552, 672, 840).

Builds

Full example set with tools/build.py (arm-none-eabi-gcc 14.2.1, MinSizeRel), master and this branch: stm32f723disco and stm32u5a5nucleo, each in slave mode and with --cflag=-DCFG_TUD_DWC2_DMA_ENABLE=1, plus stm32f407disco and feather_nrf52840_express. All pass; the warnings are the same as on master (only newlib's _close/_fstat/... stub notes at link time).

pre-commit

pre-commit run --all-files: check-yaml, trailing-whitespace, end-of-file-fixer, codespell, unique-example-pids, unit-test (Ceedling, 384 tests pass), family-json, setup-toolchain-test, esp-idf-image-pin and membrowse-targets pass. The hooks that need the maintainers' agentrc (gen-doc, hil-test, change-impact-test, claude-scripts, drivers-coverage) could not run here; they fail the same way on master.

Without a dedicated hardware FIFO (CFG_TUD_EDPT_DEDICATED_HWFIFO == 0,
for example DWC2 in DMA mode), audiod_rx_xfer_isr() copies each received
packet from the linear buffer into the OUT FIFO, and returns through
TU_VERIFY when tu_fifo_write_n() writes nothing. It writes nothing for a
zero-length packet, so the function returns before usbd_edpt_xfer()
re-arms the endpoint and before tud_audio_rx_done_isr() runs. The
endpoint then receives nothing until the host selects an alternate
setting again.

A zero-length packet is a Transfer Delimiter (USB Audio Data Formats
2.0, 2.1), which a host may send in place of any packet. Write to the
FIFO only when the packet has data, so that the re-arm and the callback
run for a zero-length packet too.

Add a unit test that sends a packet, a zero-length packet and another
packet to an isochronous OUT endpoint.

[Medium impact] The PR appears safe to merge; no actionable issues were found.

Summary

Fixes audio OUT reception after an empty packet on devices without a dedicated hardware FIFO.

  • Audio OUT streams keep receiving after a zero-length packet.

Acknowledgment: metebalci explicitly notes the test-only CFG_TUD_EDPT_DEDICATED_HWFIFO redefinition warning. The later per-test value is intentional and selects the linear-buffer path.

Walkthrough

The audio OUT receive path now skips the FIFO write when a transfer completes with zero bytes. It still re-arms the endpoint. Unit tests cover endpoint re-arming after a zero-length packet, preservation of adjacent nonempty packets, and the receive-done callback’s zero-byte count.

The firmware README, README and design describe both local patches, the
zero-length packet re-arm (merged upstream as hathach/tinyusb#4443) and
the isochronous OUT re-arm for the microframe after the received packet
(submitted as #4444), the own-microframe hole counter, and that the
re-arm patch's gain depends on the host: the device's own misses came
from one host path, a Linux VM with a USB 3 card passed through behind
a hub; a bare-metal laptop and an iPad lost nothing without it.

Measurements gain sections on where Linux losses come from, the late
completions and the re-arm patch, zero-length packets, a second Linux
host, the 1.1.0 regression on all three boards, packets neither received
nor counted at a stream's edge, and the 1.1.0 load figures. Two known
issues are gone: zero-length packets and a rate change during a stream
are now tested on hardware.
