tu_edpt_stream_write() and tu_edpt_stream_read() take a uint32_t size but narrowed it to uint16_t for the fifo, so a 65536-byte request became 0 and 65537 became 1. The caller gets 0 back, retries the same size, and the transfer stalls. #2219 fixed this inside CDC; f11adb0 moved CDC onto the shared stream and the clamp was lost.

The request is now clamped to UINT16_MAX at the stream boundary, covering every stream user, and buffered tud_vendor_n_write() no longer casts before calling it. Clamping to the fifo's free space was avoided because overwritable TX streams (CDC when disconnected, printer) must keep writing.

Validation

  • New test_usbd_stream_wide_request: fails on master at 65536, passes with the fix; covers write, read and overwrite mode. pre-commit run --all-files green.
  • Builds: full example sets on stm32f407disco and raspberry_pi_pico. Size: +11 B flash, 0 RAM across all pico examples.
  • Hardware, raspberry_pi_pico: a temporary cdc_msc build makes one tud_cdc_write/tud_cdc_read call of the given size and drains the remainder; the host checks count and data.
request master write master read fix write fix read
65535 pass pass pass pass
65536 0 bytes sent device stops pass pass
65537 0 bytes sent device stops pass pass
  • HIL regression on pico, stm32f407disco, stm32f723disco and feather_nrf52840_express: every usbtest (30/30), cdc, cdc_dual_ports, cdc_msc_throughput and printer_to_cdc case passed. Failures in the pico host battery, feather mtp/audio and f723 host/cdc_msc_hid also fail on unrelated branches (run, run).

Other 32-to-16-bit wraps found by rescanning the public API:

  • Host MSC: tuh_msc_read10/write10 passed block_count * block_size to the 16-bit usbh_edpt_xfer(). The data stage is now split into 0xFC00-byte transfers, and a short or failed piece ends it. On stm32f723disco, one 192-sector READ(10) timed out on master (2/2) and passes with the fix (4/4), with a valid CSW and data identical to a chunked re-read. HIL host/msc_file_explorer and _freertos pass.
  • tuh_edpt_xfer() rejects a buflen above UINT16_MAX. tud_mtp_response_send() rejects a container larger than CFG_TUD_MTP_EP_BUFSIZE.
  • Device MSC: the host-computed READ10/WRITE10 block size was narrowed to uint16_t, so 66048 bytes for one block read as 512 and walked past the requested LBAs. It now fails with a stall and full residue, following BOT §6.7 cases 4/9. HIL device/cdc_msc and msc_dual_lun pass on pico and stm32f723disco.
  • Each fix has a new unit test that fails without it. Size across all pico examples: host MSC +130 B flash / +16 B RAM, MTP +32 B, usbh +1 B, device MSC +4 B.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The vendor buffered transmit path forwards the full bufsize to tu_edpt_stream_write. The stream read and write APIs clamp requests to UINT16_MAX before narrowing the size for FIFO operations. Unit tests cover requests of 65535, 65536, and 65537 bytes.

MSC device validation rejects READ10 and WRITE10 commands with zero blocks or block sizes above the 16-bit range. The MSC host splits data transfers into chunks of up to 0xFC00 bytes and checks READ10 and WRITE10 lengths for 32-bit overflow. The host endpoint transfer API and MTP response path also validate transfer lengths.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to df5d5

An MSC command can remain pending if a later data chunk cannot be submitted. Handle that failure before merging unless the risk is explicitly accepted.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to df5d5

Large USB mass-storage transfers now require several submissions. If a later submission fails, the command can remain incomplete without notifying the application. The impact is limited to that host command; no direct malicious trigger or broader compromise was established.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · observed: A failed submission after a completed MSC data chunk leaves the command in its data stage without scheduling a status transfer or notifying its completion callback. An application waiting for that command may not receive a terminal result.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The observed failed-submission path affects an in-progress MSC host command and its application completion notification. The endpoint layer clears busy and claimed flags on controller submission failure, so the evidence does not establish a permanently occupied endpoint.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A controller submission failure after a completed chunk can leave an application without a terminal command result. The inspected path does not establish that a USB peer can deliberately cause that submission failure.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — MSC chunk submissions remain below the host endpoint’s 16-bit length limit. The public endpoint API separately rejects oversized caller lengths before narrowing them.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Disconnect cleanup clears MSC interface state, but the failed subsequent-chunk branch itself neither enters a terminal state nor calls the command completion callback.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Give failed later-chunk submissions an explicit terminal error and completion path, and exercise that transition with a transfer stub that rejects the second submission.

RetriggerConfidence Score: 3/5

[Medium risk] Fixes integer overflow in USB transfer size handling.

The PR is not safe to merge while host-MSC submission failures can strand commands and permit another CBW on an unsynchronized device.

Fix All in Claude CodeFindings

Fix with agent prompt
### Issue 1
src/class/msc/msc_host.c:352
If submitting a later data chunk or the status transfer fails, `TU_ASSERT` returns from `msch_xfer_cb()` without calling the command's completion callback. The host has already accepted the command, but no transfer remains pending to trigger that callback, so a caller waiting for completion can wait indefinitely.

---

For each issue above, determine whether it is valid and should be fixed. If so, fix it directly.
Summary

The PR clamps wide device-stream requests and addresses other 32-to-16-bit transfer-length wraps in host MSC, device MSC, MTP, and the host endpoint API. Since the previous review, it also removed host-MSC stage-submission failure handling and its test.

  • The transfer-length fixes add regression coverage for wide requests.
  • Host-MSC submission failures now lack both command completion and protection against another CBW.

tu_edpt_stream_write/read take a uint32_t bufsize but passed (uint16_t)bufsize
to the fifo, so a 65536-byte request became 0 and 65537 became 1 and the
transfer stalled. #2219 added this clamp in CDC; f11adb0 moved CDC onto the
shared stream and dropped it. Clamp at the stream boundary so every stream
user is covered, and let tud_vendor_n_write pass the full request through.

tuh_msc_read10/write10 take a uint16_t block count, but the data stage was
submitted as one usbh_edpt_xfer() of (uint16_t) total_bytes, so 128 sectors of
512 bytes became a 0-byte transfer and the command wedged. Submit the data stage
in 0xFC00-byte pieces, a multiple of every bulk packet size, ending on a short or
failed piece, and reject block counts whose byte total overflows the CBW field.
tuh_edpt_xfer() narrowed a uint32_t buflen, so 65536 queued a 0-byte transfer
and returned success. tud_mtp_response_send() took the container length unchecked,
wrapping above 64 KiB and reading past the endpoint buffer below that.
The host-computed block size was narrowed to uint16_t, so 66048 bytes for one block read as 512 and walked past the requested LBAs.
