Recall: leave the calling thread out, and an evidence mode - #276
Conversation
Add exclude_thread, a ThreadWindow, to RecallRequest and FetchRequest. A host reading inside a conversation logs the user's turn before it reads, so without an exclusion the message being answered comes back as a memory. ThreadWindow moves into tinymemory-api (tinymemory-tools re-exports it), with covers_meta and validate. The reference engine drops covered items; the CortexDB engine drops them from the decoded pack events, so fetch hits and recall citations leave the thread out (CortexDB narrows only by label, and its answer text is still written from the whole pack). Holistic recall's answer sections pass the pack's window to the engine. A new conformance check makes every engine honour it. The exclusion is on read requests only, never on MetaFilter, so it cannot narrow a forget or an erase. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Tiny Sweeper reviewThis pull request lets recall and fetch leave a thread's turns out of what they return, and adds an evidence recall mode that returns retrieved evidence as text instead of a synthesised answer. A shared `ThreadWindow` type now lives in `tinymemory-api`, rides as `exclude_thread` on both `RecallRequest` and `FetchRequest`, and is applied by the reference engine and by the Cortex engine on the decoded pack events; the tools crate re-exports the API type where its own copy previously lived. A new `RecallMode::Evidence` on `RecallRequest` routes Cortex recall through a new `engine/evidence.rs` renderer that never calls the answer route, with the same exclusion applied and derived facts and beliefs resting on excluded turns left out. Across the critique, security, tests, commits, and description lanes no finding was reported by any lane; the critique lane could not review three files and the description lane reported the revision's description accurate against the code. Documented limitations remain: on the Cortex answer path the exclusion reaches citations only, and a fact derived from an excluded turn the pack did not return cannot be told apart. State: Incomplete Review snapshot
Completeness: Incomplete What changedIn `crates/tinymemory-api/src/query/mod.rs`, `ThreadWindow` is defined with `whole`, `covers`, `covers_meta`, and `validate`, `RecallMode` is added with `Answer` as default plus `is_answer` for serde skipping, and both `RecallRequest` and `FetchRequest` gain `exclude_thread` and (for recall) `mode`, defaulted in their constructors and validated as non-blank; the crate root in `crates/tinymemory-api/src/lib.rs` re-exports `RecallMode` and `ThreadWindow`. The `MemoryEngine::recall` doc in `crates/tinymemory-api/src/engine/mod.rs` is widened to cover evidence mode. The reference engine in `crates/tinymemory-api/src/conformance/reference/mod.rs` retains only hits the window does not cover for both recall and fetch, and in evidence mode returns the citation snippets as its answer with no model. The Cortex engine gains `crates/tinymemory-integrations/src/cortex/engine/evidence.rs` with `recall_evidence`, `gather`, and `render`, registered in `crates/tinymemory-integrations/src/cortex/engine/mod.rs`, and `crates/tinymemory-integrations/src/cortex/engine/recall.rs` dispatches to it when the mode is `Evidence` and passes `exclude_thread` into `ranked`, whose signature in `crates/tinymemory-integrations/src/cortex/engine/fetch.rs` now takes the optional window. `crates/tinymemory-tools/src/recall/gather.rs` forwards the window and pins `RecallMode::Answer` per section, `crates/tinymemory-tools/src/recall/types.rs` replaces its local `ThreadWindow` with a re-export of the API type, and the two read entry points in `crates/tinymemory-tools/src/tools/read/mod.rs` pass `None` and the default answer mode. Docs `docs/architecture/cortex-flows.md` and `docs/specs/agent-memory.md` describe the exclusion step, its citation-only reach on the Cortex answer path, and the new evidence-mode flow. Features

RecallRequest gains mode: RecallMode, Answer (the default, unchanged) or Evidence. In evidence mode the engine writes no answer: RecallAnswer's answer carries the recalled evidence as text for the caller's own model, and model is None. The CortexDB engine reads the same per-scope granular packs and never asks /v1/answer. It renders the evidence itself (engine/evidence.rs): dated facts, beliefs, then the admitted turns as [date] [role] text, merged rank by rank across the packs. Turns an exclude_thread window covers never appear, nor do facts supported by them or beliefs resting on those facts. Derived records carry no item metadata, so they are rendered only for a filter that narrows by reach and kinds alone. The reference engine returns its matching items as lines. Conformance checks that an evidence recall returns evidence and citations, reports no model, and never contains an excluded turn's text. Measured in openhuman-benchmarks tinyhumansai#38: skipping the answer route removed recall timeouts and the answer/citation mismatch, and evidence recall was the best memory arm through OpenHuman. The memory tool's recall now asks the engine for RecallMode::Evidence
(the agent's own model answers from it) and excludes the calling thread,
whose user turn is logged before the tool reads and otherwise came back
as a memory; fetch excludes it too. ops::recall_with / fetch_with carry
the mode and the window; ops::recall and ops::fetch, used by RPC, are
unchanged. The tool returns {evidence, items} (or a note when nothing
was recalled) and its description says recall returns evidence and to
search again before concluding something is not stored.
Bumps tinymemory to the commit with tinyhumansai/tinymemory#276 (read
exclusion, evidence mode) and #277 (exclusion covers conversation turns
only, so learnings made in the thread stay readable).
Measured in tinyhumansai/openhuman-benchmarks#38 on CortexDB: evidence
recall removed the answer-route timeouts and the answer/citation
mismatch, and the question being answered no longer comes back.

Summary
Two changes to recall, measured in openhuman-benchmarks #38 (memory through OpenHuman on CortexDB):
exclude_threadonRecallRequestandFetchRequest. A host reading inside a conversation can leave that conversation's turns out. OpenHuman logs the user's turn before the agent's memory tool reads, so today the message being answered comes back as a memory. In Run the conformance suite against the three hosted adapters (#18 §E1) #38, the agent rejected CortexDB's correct answer to a question because its only supporting citation was the question itself.RecallMode::Evidence. Recall can return the evidence it found instead of a written answer, for hosts whose own model answers. On CortexDB this skips/v1/answerentirely. In Run the conformance suite against the three hosted adapters (#18 §E1) #38 that removed recall timeouts, because the answer and verification calls had pushed recalls past OpenHuman's 15 s limit. It also removed the answer/citation mismatch, where the answer is grounded on one pack while citations come from all packs. Evidence recall was the best memory setup through OpenHuman (8½/13 against 6 for the library pack on LoCoMo conversation 0).Related issue
tinyhumansai/openhuman-benchmarks#38. The findings are in the issue comments.
API or behavior changes
ThreadWindowmoves fromtinymemory-toolsintotinymemory-api(withwhole,covers,covers_meta,validate).tinymemory_tools::recall::ThreadWindowre-exports it.RecallRequestgainsexclude_thread: Option<ThreadWindow>andmode: RecallMode(Answerby default).FetchRequestgainsexclude_thread. All are serde-defaulted and skipped at their defaults, so the wire form is unchanged. Code building these structs with a struct literal must add the fields (OpenHuman'smemory::ops::recalldoes); thenewconstructors set them.validate()refuses a blank excluded thread id.Answer mode is unchanged except for the exclusion. On CortexDB the exclusion reaches
fetchhits and recall citations, but not the answer text CortexDB writes from the whole pack. That is documented.Evidence mode on CortexDB (
engine/evidence.rs) uses the same per-scope granular packs and no answer route. TinyMemory renders:## Facts:[valid_from] statement;## Beliefs;## Conversation:[YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM UTC] [role] text, merged rank by rank across packs.Excluded turns never appear, nor do facts supported by them or beliefs resting on those facts. Derived records carry no item metadata, so they render only for a filter that narrows by reach and kinds alone.
episodesandunderstandingare not rendered.modelisNone, and citations are the conversation's items, at mostlimit.Reference engine: honours both. Evidence mode returns its matching items as lines.
Conformance: a new
excluded_threadcheck covers fetch (every mode) and recall citations, a turn beforefrom_turnbeing kept, blank-id refusal, and evidence recall never containing an excluded turn's text. Therecallcheck also requires evidence mode to return evidence and citations and no model.Holistic recall's answer sections pass the pack's window to the engine. The generic
memory_recall/memory_fetchtools keepAnswerand no exclusion, becauseToolScopedoes not carry the calling thread; that is a natural follow-up.The exclusion is deliberately not on
MetaFilter, which is also the forget and erase filter: CortexDB selects forgets server-side, where an exclusion cannot apply.Whether this needs a minor or a major bump is the maintainers' call. It is additive on the wire and through the constructors, but breaks struct literals.
Design note: I rendered the evidence in TinyMemory rather than returning CortexDB's own
context_block. That keeps the exclusion exact and the granular-only isolation intact, and it is testable on the mock. While checking this I saw a granular pack on CortexDB 0.10.4 does carry acontext_block(events only), contrary to the comment incortex/log/notes.rs. I left that comment alone here.Validation
