Add Rust-side bindings for APIs introduced by the vendored jemalloc 5.4.0 bump (#185):

  • tikv-jemalloc-sys: EXTENT_ALLOC_FLAG_PINNED / EXTENT_ALLOC_FLAG_MASK, documenting the low-bit flag protocol carried in pointers returned from extent_alloc_t hooks;
  • tikv-jemalloc-ctl: stats::pinned, wrapping the new stats.pinned mallctl.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added support for jemalloc 5.4.0 extent-allocation flags, including a flag for marking hook-provided memory as pinned and a mask for identifying reserved pointer bits. Pinned extents are non-reclaimable and must be committed.
    • Added access to the stats.pinned statistic, which reports unused free extents backed by pinned memory. Reads are cached until the statistics epoch advances.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The sys crate exposes jemalloc 5.4.0 extent-allocation flag constants and documents the pointer low-bit protocol for extent hooks. The ctl crate adds a read-only stats::pinned accessor for stats.pinned. The Unreleased changelog records both additions.

Layer / File(s) Summary
Extent-allocation flags and hook contract
jemalloc-sys/src/lib.rs
Public constants identify the pinned flag and flag mask. The hook documentation describes the returned-pointer flag protocol and the commit requirement for pinned memory.
Pinned statistic and release notes
jemalloc-ctl/src/stats.rs, CHANGELOG.md
The ctl crate exposes the read-only stats.pinned mallctl as libc::size_t. The changelog records both API additions.

Change: Feature

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 24dba

The two previously identified documentation concerns are addressed. No actionable issue remains before normal merge checks.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 24dba

The new bindings do not appear to add an application entrypoint or change allocator execution directly. Their safe use depends on downstream hooks and a compatible allocator version, which could not be fully verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The plausible effect is within processes whose custom allocator hooks use the new flags. The available evidence identifies no new remote entrypoint or in-repository consumer, but cannot establish the behavior of external dependents.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The existing unsafe extent-hook callback remains the point where an application supplies an address and commit state. This PR documents that boundary and exposes flag values; it does not add hook registration or dispatch.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Document or check allocator-version compatibility when using an external library, particularly before a custom hook returns tagged pointers. This is a precaution, not an observed incompatible deployment.

Address review comments on this change:

- EXTENT_ALLOC_FLAG_PINNED: the documented low-bit example applied | between
a raw pointer and an integer constant, which Rust rejects; show a
  compiling form instead:
`(addr as usize | EXTENT_ALLOC_FLAG_PINNED as usize) as *mut c_void`.

- stats::pinned: state explicitly that only unused (free) extents are
counted, matching the upstream mallctl description ("Total number of bytes
in unused extents backed by non-reclaimable memory"), so readers do not
take the value as covering extents backing live allocations.

Documentation only.

Both findings addressed in f707313:

  • Flag example (EXTENT_ALLOC_FLAG_PINNED): *mut _ is indeed rejected by rustc (E0641); the doc now shows (addr as usize | EXTENT_ALLOC_FLAG_PINNED as usize) as *mut c_void, which compiles.
  • stats::pinned scope: docs now state that only unused (free) extents backed by non-reclaimable memory are counted, matching the upstream mallctl description; extents backing live allocations do not contribute.
