Adds Dependabot configuration for automated dependency updates and an auto-merge workflow that merges Dependabot PRs when CI passes.

View guided diff

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Chores
    • Dependency updates for npm packages and GitHub Actions are checked monthly, with matching updates grouped into pull requests. Up to five update pull requests can be open for each ecosystem.
    • Eligible dependency update pull requests are automatically merged after their checks succeed. Pull requests with pending or failed checks are not merged automatically.
    • CI workflows can also be started manually.

Walkthrough

Dependabot checks npm and GitHub Actions monthly. A workflow evaluates completed Dependabot CI runs and squash-merges the matching pull request when its checks pass. CI also accepts manual dispatches.

Changes: Dependabot automation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configure dependency updates
.github/dependabot.yml
Dependabot checks npm and GitHub Actions monthly, limits each ecosystem to five open pull requests, and groups updates for each ecosystem.
Find the pull request for a completed CI run
.github/workflows/dependabot-automerge.yml
The workflow runs after successful CI completions by Dependabot on matching branches. It locates the open pull request and records its number and head SHA.
Validate the pull request SHA and checks
.github/workflows/dependabot-automerge.yml
The workflow compares the run SHA with the pull request head SHA, then evaluates check runs and the latest commit status per context. Pending checks take precedence over failures.
Merge and dispatch CI
.github/workflows/dependabot-automerge.yml, .github/workflows/ci.yml
When validation succeeds, the workflow squash-merges using the run SHA, attempts branch deletion, and dispatches CI on the default branch. CI also accepts manual dispatches.

Change: Other

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 1df44

Dependency updates can fail CI or remain unmerged after checks pass. Address these limitations before relying on auto-merge.

Architecture risk: Low · up to 1df44

The changed surface does not map to a changed system, dependency edge, entrypoint, or external dependency.

Changed systems: None identified.

Full details: Tests Not Weakened

Explanation

No test was deleted, skipped, or weakened by the diff. The existing bun test, browser test, and publish test commands remain unchanged. The only CI change adds workflow_dispatch. The auto-merge workflow filters non-GitHub Actions review checks; it does not remove or alter a repository test.

Full details: Public Text

Explanation

No failure condition is present. The changed files contain no /home/, /tmp/, scratchpad, cost, secret value, personal name, or internal task ID. The workflow mentions generic write token and GITHUB_TOKEN, but exposes no credential. The PR title and body contain no prohibited text; the /pull/7 URL is a public PR reference, not an internal task ID.

Full details: Proof

Explanation

The PR body contains no Verification section, no named checks, no execution methods, and no numeric results. The reviewed diff adds workflow and configuration files only; it adds no verification script, test, or report. This matches the standing failure.

Resolution

Add a Verification section to the PR body. For every check, state how it ran and provide numeric results. Add a script, test, or report for each speed, accuracy, or parity claim.

Review findings, answered for the whole PR (the same template goes to every repo):

Fixed in the refreshed files:

  • The job now also requires workflow_run.conclusion == 'success', so a cancelled or failed CI run cannot merge.
  • The branch delete after the merge tolerates a branch that GitHub already deleted (404/422).
  • github-actions uses directory: "/".
  • Manifests in subdirectories get their own update entry.
  • After a merge, the workflow dispatches CI on the default branch (a merge made with GITHUB_TOKEN starts no push workflow); CI gained a workflow_dispatch trigger for this.
  • zizmor: reasoned ignore on workflow_run; the PR head SHA reaches the script through env.

By design, not changed:

  • Only GitHub Actions check runs count. Review bots stay in progress for a long time and nothing re-triggers the workflow.
  • A pending external commit status holds the PR until it resolves.
  • Dependabot PRs merge without a human approval when CI is green, major updates included. That is the policy for these repos.

Second round, answered for the whole PR:

  • Fixed: a failed branch delete is now logged as a warning and never skips the CI dispatch.
  • Fixed: Cargo workspace members share the root entry; only a directory with its own Cargo.lock gets a separate Cargo entry.
  • qubitbook repos: the Stack workflow is a pull-request guard, so it is no longer listed as CI or dispatched.
  • By design: a failed CI dispatch logs a warning and keeps the merge job green; the hard-coded file list is rendered from the same source as the trigger list.

Follow-up Comments

Outside diff Configure the root project as a Bun ecosystem.

14-22: Major · Stability & Availability · Quick win

Configure the root project as a Bun ecosystem.

The entry uses package-ecosystem: "npm", but Dependabot defines Bun separately as package-ecosystem: "bun" and supports the text-based bun.lock there. The npm entry can update package.json without updating bun.lock. Then bun install --frozen-lockfile can fail in CI.

Suggested fix
- - package-ecosystem: "npm"
+ - package-ecosystem: "bun"

Update the root Dependabot entry’s package-ecosystem setting from npm to bun so
Dependabot updates bun.lock alongside package.json.
