Fixes #4200: the three items, one commit each, each with a unit test in test/unit-test/test/host/hub/test_hub_host.c.

  1. hub_open() address range (hub: reject a non-hub address in hub_open()): TU_VERIFY(dev_addr > CFG_TUH_DEVICE_MAX, 0) first, as hub_close() has. test_open_rejects_non_hub_address offers the hub interface at every address in 1..CFG_TUH_DEVICE_MAX. On master hub_open() accepts it (returns 16); under -fsanitize=address that is a global-buffer-overflow write in hub_open(), 7 bytes before hub_itfs.
  2. mtt after a failed open (hub: set mtt only once hub_open() has opened the status endpoint): the same hunk as in dwc2/hcd: schedule periodic splits per transaction translator, with isochronous splits #4265 and Add ChipIdea EHCI isochronous support and fix descriptor coherency #3991, kept identical so whichever lands first the others still merge cleanly. test_open_failed_does_not_leave_mtt fails an MTT hub's open and closes it, then checks that a single-TT hub at the same address reads its hub descriptor without SET_INTERFACE, and that an MTT hub that does open still selects alternate setting 1.
  3. Short GET_STATUS (hub: treat a short GET_STATUS reply as failed): process_new_status() fails a reply shorter than requested and re-arms the status poll, as for a failed read. test_short_port_status_rearms and test_short_hub_status_rearms complete the request with 0 to 3 bytes over a ctrl_buf still holding an earlier change; on master they send a CLEAR_FEATURE for that stale change.
The same commit adds the check where enumeration behind a hub reads that port status from ctrl_buf (ENUM_HUB_RERSET, ENUM_HUB_CLEAR_RESET), next to the result checks hub: recover a stuck status-change interrupt poll (Fruit Jam CH334F USB host) #3776 added there: a short reply fails enumeration as a STALL does. There is no usbh unit test to extend for that part.

The test stub complete_ctrl_data() now sets actual_len, as usbh does from the data stage.

Tested: cd test/unit-test && ceedling test:all passes 388/388, also with -fsanitize=address; the four new tests fail on master. src/host/usbh.c and src/host/hub.c build with the examples' warning set (-Wall -Wextra -Werror -Wsign-compare -Wcast-qual ...).

usbh picks a device's address range from bDeviceClass alone and offers
every interface to every class driver, so a device that is not hub class
but carries a hub interface reaches hub_open() with an address in
1..CFG_TUH_DEVICE_MAX. get_hub_itf() then indexes hub_itfs[] below its
start and itf_num, ep_in (and mtt) are written out of bounds.

Check the range first, as hub_close() already does.

Refs hathach#4200 (item 1)
mtt was set before the alternate setting and endpoint checks. When open
failed, ep_in stayed 0, so hub_close() skipped its clear and the next hub
at that address was configured as multi-TT.

Refs hathach#4200 (item 2)
process_new_status() decoded the hub and port status without checking
xfer->actual_len, so a short reply was decoded from what ctrl_buf held
before, e.g. another port's change bits. A reply shorter than requested
now fails like a failed read: the status poll is re-armed.

Enumeration behind a hub reads the same port status from ctrl_buf after
its GET_STATUS (ENUM_HUB_RERSET, ENUM_HUB_CLEAR_RESET): a short reply
fails it there too.

Explain Change →

Walkthrough

Hub opening now rejects device addresses within the configured device-address range and stores multi-TT state only after the interrupt endpoint opens successfully. Hub status processing and hub-port enumeration also reject successful transfers that return incomplete status responses. Unit tests cover address rejection, failed-open cleanup, alternate-setting selection, and short-response handling.

Possibly related PRs

  • hathach/tinyusb#4265: Both changes defer storing multi-TT state until the hub interrupt endpoint opens successfully.

The changes harden hub opening and reject incomplete status replies. The remaining disconnect race is pre-existing and does not block merging this hardening change after normal checks.

Explanation

[#4200] hub_open() rejects non-hub addresses and stores mtt only after the endpoint opens. Hub status polling rejects short replies and re-arms polling. The hub tests cover all three fixes, including short hub and port status replies. Hub-port enumeration also rejects short status replies.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 33.33% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 6 functions across 3 files.

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

[Medium impact] The PR appears safe to merge; no actionable issues were found.

Summary

Hardens hub setup and status reads against non-compliant USB devices.

  • Only reserved hub addresses can open a hub interface.
  • Multi-TT settings are saved only after a hub endpoint opens.
  • Hub actions use only complete GET_STATUS replies.

anabobillo3 explicitly chose to end enumeration on short hub status replies, matching stalled reads. No actionable issues were found.
