Ignore set config completion for a device removed during its mount callback - #4432
Class drivers call usbh_driver_set_config_complete() after the application's mount callback. When that callback runs tuh_task() and the device is removed meanwhile, the completion finished enumerating the closed address: a tuh_mount_cb() for a removed device, and enum_teardown() wiped an enumeration started in the meantime.
Solution
The completion is now ignored unless the device is configured and is the one being enumerated.
Not covered here, tracked in #4433: a same-address replacement that already reached SET_CONFIGURATION, and class work
done after the mount callback on cleared state (CDC/MIDI RX arming, MIDI2's mount callback after its descriptor
callback, audio's completion on a cleared address).
Unit: new test_usbh_config_complete (5 cases); ceedling test:all 353/353 pass.
Build: check_build.py --base origin/master: 44/44 boards ok.
Size: host/usbh.c +20 B flash, RAM unchanged (raspberry_pi_pico, host/cdc_msc_hid).
Hardware: the removal race is not reproduced on hardware.
### Issue 1
test/unit-test/test/host/usbh/test_usbh_config_complete.c:152
The new hook ignores the return value of `usbh_defer_func_ms_async()`. This violates the repository guide's requirement to check return values. Wrap the call in `TEST_ASSERT_TRUE(...)` so the test checks that scheduling succeeded. This repository requirement must be met before merging.
```suggestion TEST_ASSERT_TRUE(usbh_defer_func_ms_async(ENUM_DEBOUNCING_DELAY_MS, enum_delay_async, ENUM_AFTER_DEBOUNCING_DELAY));```---
For each issue above, determine whether it is valid and should be fixed. If so, fix it directly.
Summary
Adds a guard to usbh_driver_set_config_complete() so a stale completion cannot finish mounting a removed device or clear another device's pending setup.
Late configuration completions stop when their device is no longer being enumerated.
Review used source inspection; no tests or hardware checks were run.
usbh_driver_set_config_complete now returns when the device is not configured or its address does not match the active enumeration. New unit tests cover successful completion, ignored completion, device removal during a mount callback, and preservation of a subsequent enumeration.
Explanation
The PR implements the central fix requested by #4425. usbh_driver_set_config_complete() now ignores completion unless the device is configured and its address is the active enumerating_daddr. This covers class drivers that call completion after an application callback. The new test_usbh_config_complete covers normal completion, removal during the callback, preservation of a later enumeration, a non-active address, and an unconfigured device. The supplied results report 353/353 unit tests passing.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes are limited to the host completion guard and focused unit-test support. The fake driver and callback overrides exercise the removal race and related state checks. These changes directly support #4425. The description's exclusions are tracked separately in #4433 and do not create unrelated scope in this PR.
Explanation
The description states the problem (class drivers calling usbh_driver_set_config_complete() after the mount callback, with a device removed during tuh_task(), causing a stale tuh_mount_cb() and enum_teardown() wiping a new enumeration), the solution (completion ignored unless the device is configured and is the one being enumerated), explicit scope exclusions, and test, build, size, and hardware results. It directly describes the changeset and the linked issue #4425, so it is related and specific.
Guard the class completion against a same-address replacement.
A class mount callback can run a nested tuh_task() that removes the device and enumerates a replacement at the same address. The replacement can then wait in class configuration. When the original callback resumes, its completion passes the new guard and advances the replacement's interface chain. Completion can skip replacement interfaces or call tuh_mount_cb() early. Tag completions with a device generation and reject stale ones before they reach usbh_driver_set_config_complete().
This is the residual case the PR excludes. The PR does not change this path, so the race predates it.
Legend — p50/p99: median / 99th-percentile duration over all calls in the capture window (µs; p50 = typical cost, p99 = tail latency). Δ: change vs base branch; − is faster/better; +∞% marks a jump from an (effectively) zero base -- not literally infinite, just too big to express as a normal percentage; gone marks a row base had that PR does not (work that used to run no longer does, or was renamed -- investigate before merging). pt: percentage points. CPU load, workload win: context's busy share summed from the raw scheduling events over the workload window (the span of tud_cdc_read activity -- the throughput test's own footprint); falls back to the whole-recording share, labelled as such. stack high-water: peak bytes of stack used. Function rows/bars are ordered by CPU occupancy (calls × p50) in the PR capture, hottest first; base-only rows sort after them. – ⚠︎: metric withheld — RTT ring overflowed (overflow N), no timestamp frequency (no time base), or too few samples (n<50 for p50; p99 needs n>100 for the tail estimate to be statistically meaningful, so it can show n=<n> even on a row whose p50 is shown); withheld beats wrong. Durations read p50 / p99 / max, all as captured — spliced CALL/RET pairs are discarded upstream and counted in dropped_pairs.
