Priority: Low
Change: Refactor
Merge Risk: Low · up to 01649
This change moves AgentFind to the shared vectorized load path. Two small issues remain: the predicate wrapper may mishandle some fancy contiguous iterators, and one benchmark uses undefined input data. Neither is likely to break common usage, so the change is mergeable once the owner is aware of them.

important: Use alignof(VectorT) for the alignment check.
If a custom FindIfPolicy sets vec_size to 3, InputT = float passes the vectorization gate and VectorT has size 12. cuda::is_aligned requires a power-of-two alignment, so passing sizeof(VectorT) can trigger its assertion and applies an invalid alignment mask.

important: Guard against volatile iterator references.
For volatile T*, value_type is non-volatile, but reference is volatile T&, so attempt_vectorization remains true. Process can select the vectorized ConsumeTile branch, where reinterpret_cast<const VectorT*>(d_in + ...) removes volatile. This cast is ill-formed, so the volatile specialization can fail to compile rather than perform a non-volatile read.
Check remove_reference_t<typename iterator_traits<InputIteratorT>::reference> instead. Checking the pointee type is equivalent for native pointers, but the iterator reference is the correct generic check.
We use vectorized loads in a lot of places in CUB. However, the machinery used was not really suited to current improvements, such as wider vectorized loads and also alignment issues.
This unifies that machinery in a single type that ensures that we can use the widest possible vector load for a given array of T
Integers and floating-point values are stored as themselves, other types as unsigned integer words of their alignment. The storage is a single array of words, so a pointer to the first word can be iterated over the whole storage, which rebasing an iterator onto the storage relies on. `__alias` returns the object at a given index, words directly so that it returns the live word without laundering, other types through launder.
I went to great length to ensure that there are no SASS differences between the old and new machinery and also that we do not rely on the cuda vector types to keep compile times down.
The users are switched over to it in the following commits.
Reshape tensors for vectorized access to `cuda::__as_bytes_vectorized_t<char, N>`, which has the same size and alignment as `__vector_access<N>` for the power of two widths used here, and remove the now unused helper.
`__max_vector_access` is now provided by `as_bytes_vectorized.h`, so it is removed from `vector_access.h` as well. The copy headers now include what they previously got transitively through `vector_access.h`.
`InternalLoadDirectBlockedVectorized` now loads all items of a thread with the widest vectors that evenly divide them and requires the input to be aligned to `cuda::__as_bytes_vectorized_t<InputT, ItemsPerThread>`. The alignment check and the fallback to `LoadDirectBlocked` move into `LoadDirectBlockedVectorized`, which also falls back for types that cannot be vectorized, takes a pointer to const and an optional cache load modifier.
The vectors are built from the value type `InputT` of the input and each item is converted to `T` when it is copied out of them. Therefore, `BLOCK_LOAD_VECTORIZE` no longer requires the value type of the iterator to be `T`. It also no longer checks contiguous iterators for volatile, because `cuda::__is_vectorizable` rejects volatile types and `LoadDirectBlockedVectorized` falls back to `LoadDirectBlocked` for them.
`WarpLoad` called `InternalLoadDirectBlockedVectorized` directly and relied on its fallback for unaligned input, so it switches to `LoadDirectBlockedVectorized` in the same commit.
Load vectors of `cuda::__as_bytes_vectorized_t` instead of `CubVector` and only attempt to vectorize types that are not more aligned than the widest vector access.
Load vectors of `cuda::__as_bytes_vectorized_t` instead of `cuda::std::array` and access the elements through `__alias`. The widest vector access is taken from `cuda::__max_vector_access`, which is 16 bytes before CTK 13.0, instead of being hard coded to 32 bytes.
This adds machinery for striped vectorized loads to `CUB`. There are multiple places were we need to load vectors in a striped arrangement, for example in `DeviceReduce`, `DeviceFind` and the vectorized `DeviceTransform` kernel.
Having this open coded complicates maintenance and makes it harder to reason about the code.
In the future we want to add iterator unwrapping to extend the vectorized loads to non-contiguous inputs.
`LoadDirectStripedVectorized` loads a striped arrangement of vectors of `VecSize` consecutive items: thread `t` loads
the vectors `t`, `t + ThreadsPerBlock`, and so on. Like `LoadDirectBlockedVectorized`, it loads `__as_bytes_vectorized_t`
vectors of the value type of the input if the iterator is contiguous, that type is vectorizable and the input is
aligned, and otherwise loads the same arrangement item by item. The items are converted to `T` when they are copied out
of the vectors. `InternalLoadDirectStripedVectorized` only performs the vectorized loads and asserts that the input is
aligned.
`BLOCK_LOAD_STRIPED_VECTORIZED` uses vectors of the width that `BLOCK_LOAD_VECTORIZE` loads. Guarded loads use the
arrangement of `BLOCK_LOAD_STRIPED`.
`DeviceReduce`, `DeviceFind` and the vectorized `DeviceTransform` kernel load their full tiles with
`InternalLoadDirectStripedVectorized`, and `DeviceTransform` loads non-contiguous inputs with
`LoadDirectStripedVectorized`. The `VectorT` of `AgentReduce` is now sized by `vec_size` instead of `VECTOR_LOAD_LENGTH`,
so policies with fewer items per thread than `VECTOR_LOAD_LENGTH` no longer load vectors wider than their items.
Fancy iterators over a pointer are not contiguous, so algorithms miss the fast copy. Unwrap peels transform, transform_output, and transform_input_output iterators to that pointer, and rebase retargets them at a copy of the storage without dropping their functors. A contiguous iterator unwraps to its address, even if it also has a base. Transform and transform_input_output iterators invoke their functor on the copy, so they can only be rebased if that functor proclaims copyable arguments.
Device pointers and vector iterators are contiguous storage. Teach them to unwrap and rebase so a transform, transform_output, or transform_input_output iterator over them can be retargeted at a copy of that storage. Like in libcu++, transform and transform_input_output iterators can only be rebased if the functor that reads the storage proclaims copyable arguments.
The vectorized block loads take an iterator and load the storage behind it with vectors into a thread-local copy. A contiguous iterator reads its items from that copy, converting them if the item type differs, like a base of the stored type. An iterator adaptor over contiguous storage, like `cuda::transform_iterator` over a pointer, reads the items through itself rebased onto the copy, so the functor runs on the loaded storage. Adaptors whose functor does not proclaim copyable arguments cannot be rebased and are loaded item by item. DeviceReduce vectorizes such adaptors, and the vectorized DeviceTransform kernel loads all of its inputs through LoadDirectStripedVectorized. Dispatch already checks the alignment of contiguous inputs, so the kernel assumes it and the compiler drops their alignment check and fallback.
Load vectors of `cuda::__as_bytes_vectorized_t` instead of `CubVector` and only attempt to vectorize types that are not more aligned than the widest vector access. The vector type is now only defined once at class scope.
AgentHistogram loads every tile with a single `BlockLoad` of samples, which uses `BLOCK_LOAD_VECTORIZE` instead of `BLOCK_LOAD_DIRECT` and, for a single channel, `BLOCK_LOAD_STRIPED_VECTORIZED` instead of `BLOCK_LOAD_STRIPED`. BlockLoad checks the alignment of every tile and loads misaligned tiles item by item, so AgentHistogram no longer checks whether all rows are aligned, and no longer needs the loads of pixels and vectors or a second instantiation of the tile loops for misaligned rows. The `vec_size` of the policy is no longer used, and policies with `BLOCK_LOAD_TRANSPOSE` or `BLOCK_LOAD_WARP_TRANSPOSE` transpose samples instead of pixels or vectors.
This fixes two bugs of the previous alignment check. A single active channel of multiple channels loaded vectors of samples whose alignment was never checked, which failed with a misaligned address for samples or rows that were not aligned to those vectors. Multiple channels with `BLOCK_LOAD_STRIPED` striped single samples of misaligned rows across threads, which split the samples of a pixel between threads and produced wrong histograms or, on sm_120, illegal memory accesses. Multiple channels now use `BLOCK_LOAD_VECTORIZE` instead, because all samples of a pixel must belong to the same thread.
AgentFind loads full tiles with `LoadDirectStripedVectorized` through a `cuda::transform_iterator` that applies the predicate, so it only keeps the results of the predicate instead of a copy of the items. BlockLoad checks the alignment and whether the items can be vectorized and otherwise loads them item by item in the same arrangement. Therefore, AgentFind no longer checks the alignment itself, misaligned inputs no longer fall back to the item-wise loop, which is up to 59% faster for misaligned `int8` inputs, and contiguous inputs of types that are not trivially copyable also use the arrangement of vectors. The predicate is wrapped into a lambda that proclaims copyable arguments, so that the transform iterator can be rebased onto the loaded vectors, which also works for function pointers.
Inputs that are not contiguous keep the coalesced item-wise loop, because loading them item by item in the arrangement of vectors is slower, by up to 54% for a `zip_iterator` over two arrays of `int` on sm_86. The vectorized `ConsumeTile` handles partial tiles itself, so that the item-wise loop is only emitted once when vectorization is not attempted.
thrust::no_init leaves the input distribution undefined. Since widen reads each byte, allocator contents can affect the measured top-k workload. Use the same generated-input convention as the sibling top-k benchmarks:

important: Unwrap the contiguous iterator before applying the predicate.
::cuda::transform_iterator{d_in + tile_offset, predicate} relies on class template argument deduction. The project guidance prohibits deduction guides for initialization.
For a thrust::device_vector iterator, transform_iterator::operator[] can pass thrust::device_reference<T> to predicate instead of T&. The item-wise fallback in LoadDirectStripedVectorized reads through that transformed iterator. This can change overload selection or cause a generic predicate to fail to compile. The scalar path avoids this by using raw_reference_cast.
Keep vectorization enabled only when the contiguous iterator also supports cuda::std::to_address.

Explanation: For non-contiguous iterator instantiations, the `if constexpr` discards the only branch that references `it`, so GCC and MSVC report it as unused and warnings-as-errors stop builds across CUB, Thrust, libcudacxx, and cudax. The same signature occurs in all 26 jobs and can be fixed centrally in `dispatch_transform.cuh`.

Verify the warnings-as-errors failure in `cub/cub/device/dispatch/dispatch_transform.cuh` by narrowly compiling an `is_pointer_aligned` instantiation with a non-contiguous iterator. Rename new Thrust template parameters to the established Thrust naming style; keep the protocol-required `__rebase` spelling and add a narrowly scoped `NOLINT(readability-identifier-naming)` where appropriate rather than changing the protocol. Make non-mutated test locals const, and either refactor the flagged base/derived assignments to avoid slicing or add narrowly justified suppressions at intentional conversion sites. Run the focused clang-tidy target and pre-commit on every modified file.
Explanation: Doxygen treats the newly added internal variable-template specializations as documented API but cannot match their macro-expanded declarations. The three reported specializations should be excluded from generated Thrust API documentation.

- Build documentation: https://github.com/NVIDIA/cccl/actions/runs/40576050866/job/122443010161
Reproduce the documentation failure and inspect existing Thrust conventions for hiding implementation-only declarations. Wrap the new internal contiguous-iterator trait specializations in `thrust/thrust/device_ptr.h`, `thrust/thrust/detail/pointer.h`, and `thrust/thrust/iterator/transform_iterator.h` with the established Doxygen `\cond`/`\endcond` form, keeping public iterator documentation unchanged. Re-run the focused documentation build and pre-commit on those headers.
Explanation: Both Python 3.14 example jobs fail during benchmark fixture setup before running test code because `pytest-benchmark` accesses pytest's removed private `_nodeid` attribute. The identical Linux and Windows traces show a dependency compatibility failure unrelated to the CUDA backend.

Reproduce the host benchmark smoke test with Python 3.14, pytest 9.2.0, and pytest-benchmark 5.3.0. Select and pin a compatible dependency pair; the conservative complete fix is to require `pytest<9` for the cuda_cccl test extras or explicitly in `ci/util/python/run_examples_tests.sh` until a verified pytest-benchmark release supports pytest 9. Keep the constraint centralized where possible, then run the focused host benchmark smoke test on Python 3.14 and validate dependency resolution for both Linux and Windows lanes.
