Since we now have the cudax::coop::make_group factory function, I think we should merge it with the cudax::coop::make_cg_equivalent_group function.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Cooperative Groups can now be converted to corresponding CCCL cooperative groups, including grid, cluster, thread-block, coalesced, and supported tile groups.
  • Changes
    • The previous make_cg_equivalent_group conversion interface is no longer available.

make_group now converts supported Cooperative Groups types to CUDA experimental cooperative groups. Cooperative Groups availability and forward declarations are controlled in the group headers. The old make_cg_equivalent_group header is removed, and interop tests use make_group.

Changes: Cooperative Groups interoperability

Layer / File(s) Summary
Gate and declare Cooperative Groups types
cudax/include/cuda/experimental/coop/__group/fwd.cuh
The availability check now honors _CUDAX_DISABLE_CG_INTEROP. When enabled, the header includes Cooperative Groups namespace details and forward-declares supported group types.
Convert Cooperative Groups inputs with make_group
cudax/include/cuda/experimental/coop/__group/make_group.cuh, cudax/include/cuda/experimental/coop/__group/cg_interop.cuh, cudax/include/cuda/experimental/coop/group, cudax/test/coop/group/cg_interop.cu
make_group adds conversions for grid, cluster, thread-block, coalesced, and supported tile groups. The umbrella header no longer includes cg_interop.cuh, which is deleted. The interop tests now check and call make_group.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Change: Refactor

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 3d59f

This is a rename and merge of existing helpers. The one remaining problem is missing direct includes, which can break compilation if include order changes. Add the includes before merging; the fix is small.

suggestion: The comment contradicts itself. It says CG's coalesced_group is not equivalent to CG's coalesced_group. The second occurrence presumably means the cudax coalesced_group. Fix the wording.

AI failure analysis

1. MatX host example GCC module-dependency warning promoted to error · 1 job

Explanation: CMake scanned `test_host.cpp` for C++ module dependencies, then GCC 14.3 rejected the generated module-dependency compilation under `-Werror`; the command already contained `-MD`, so the note indicates a toolchain or launcher interaction rather than a missing application flag. The PR changes only cudax cooperative-group headers and tests, and the compiler failed at `<built-in>` before reporting any CCCL source diagnostic, so the available evidence does not connect the failure to the API rename.

Evidence:

2026-10-19T10:18:29.3734227Z <built-in>: error: module dependencies require preprocessing [-Werror]
2026-10-19T10:18:29.3737342Z <built-in>: note: you should use the ‘-MD’ option
2026-10-19T10:18:29.3707489Z FAILED: examples/CMakeFiles/test_host.dir/test_host.cpp.o

Reproduce the MatX `test_host` target narrowly using MatX commit `3f3cc13326eced681f530cfa0de9335f5cfb6088`, GCC 14, CUDA 13.4, and the CCCL CI configuration. Inspect why CMake enables C++ module scanning for this ordinary `.cpp` target and whether the `sccache` compiler launcher changes GCC's handling of `-MD -fmodules-ts -fmodule-mapper=... -fdeps-format=p1689r5`. Prefer disabling unnecessary scanning by adding `-DCMAKE_CXX_SCAN_FOR_MODULES=OFF` to the configure command in `ci/matx/build_matx.sh`; if MatX explicitly enables scanning, apply the equivalent target-level fix upstream or in the integration. Verify first without `sccache` to distinguish a launcher incompatibility, implement the smallest durable fix, then build only the MatX `test_host` target before running the focused MatX integration build.
