Lead Software Engineer at OPIsystems with 5+ years of full-stack experience building production applications and distributed systems. I lead full-stack development for managegrain.com, an IoT SaaS platform that farms and grain businesses use to monitor their stored crops. It serves thousands of organizations and handles over 4 million device messages a day.
Based in Toronto, working remotely.
- Technical leadership: own architecture and technical design across the Rails backend, React frontend, and IoT messaging pipeline. Primary code reviewer and mentor as the team grew from 2 to 6 engineers.
- IoT and distributed systems: built cloud ingestion for a new line of field devices with AWS IoT Core, MQTT, SQS, and Protocol Buffers, working with firmware engineers on versioned message contracts.
- Performance: cut a key page's load time from about 30 seconds to 5 with PostgreSQL query and API work. Optimized the alarm notification job to run 80% faster in benchmark testing.
- Reliability: traced about 186,000 redundant background jobs per hour to repeated alarm checks and designed a consolidated replacement. Added dead-letter handling after tracing a production outage to corrupt data.
- Real-time frontend: consolidated 21 React live-data hooks into one shared WebSocket lifecycle, fixing reconnects and duplicate reloads.
Since 2020 I've built web apps, APIs, and internal tools for small businesses as DigitalEdge Creations, owning each project from requirements through deployment and support. Client sites:
